The Alliance for a Healthier Generation has awarded the 2022 National Healthy Schools award to two TSC schools: East Tipp Middle School and Klondike Middle School. The organization recognizes schools for making changes that promote healthier eating and physical activity for students and staff. Klondike and East Tipp are the only schools in Indiana to be recognized by the organization.

Wellness teacher and coach Danielle Wynn says everyone plays a role in making East Tipp one of the healthiest schools. School nurses communicate accommodations for injured students, the janitorial staff maintains a clean building, the cafeteria provides healthy options and side dishes for all students and staff members, and our health classes offer first aid, CPR and AED training.

“I think it’s important to all staff members, students and family members to realize the importance of their physical, social, and mental health,” says Wynn. “We have less behavioral issues and have a positive attitude towards school and their peers. We are seeing an increase in our academic performance, families are becoming more involved and enjoy participating in activities or events with their son or daughter, and it starts with having an administration that is completely on board and willing to help in any way possible to make our school healthy not just physically, but making sure the mental aspect is being reached and supported throughout the school year.”

P.E./Health teacher Kit Mast says Klondike Middle School has a similar approach to engage students and staff. Initiatives include a stress and relaxation course during homeroom time and incorporating more fitness activities into the week. “Having a healthy school shows our students that we care about their health and encourages them that they have one life and to live it well,” says Mast. “By demonstrating healthy eating behaviors, paired with moving our bodies, we can continue to build healthy habits that will last a lifetime.”

All TSC schools participate in INtegrate, a statewide school wellness program that encourages everyone to make healthier choices like drinking more water, eating healthy, getting more exercise and developing complete wellness (physically, mentally and socially).
