Subaru of Indiana Automotive Foundation awarded grants to several Indiana nonprofit organizations including two to the Tippecanoe School Corporation. The organization presented the grants during a ceremony June 4 at Subaru of Indiana (SIA).

Klondike Middle School received $8,971 to install six water bottle refilling stations. Student Kaden Bigger says the project supports the importance of hydrating to maintain good health. “Students will be able to carry around their own water bottles and be able to fill them up at the filling stations.”

Teacher John Vandewalle says the student council and wellness department plan to survey students before, during and after the “Hydrate for Health” campaign. “In addition to the survey results, the water systems have a meter that will indicate how many plastic bottles have been kept from landfills due to using the refillable bottles,” says Vandewalle. “This facet will be monitored by our Science Department and recycling team.”

The TSC’s English Language Learners (ELL) program received $8,202.01 to purchase instructional materials for students. “In order to best meet the needs of our English Language Learners in our schools, we must be able to provide practical and essential professional development for the teachers and tutors, effective language acquisition instruction for our ELLs and supportive materials for the families of ELLs,” says TSC Instructional Coach Amy Sturgeon.”This project would provide instructional materials to best meet the language and curricular demands for English Language Learners and their instructors. With books and games, we can work together to positively impact both language acquisition and academic growth.”
